Top Tips for Moving Home with Your Pets

Moving home can be a stressful business for animals. In the excitement of finding your perfect new home, packing and unpacking boxes, and settling in, their needs are often overlooked.

You may need to ‘paws’ for thought: keeping your pets needs upper most in your mind will help to ensure that your move is a happy experience all round!

We would advise all pet owners to ‘take the lead’ and make a ‘pet-move-plan’:

Consider whether you will be transporting your treasured furry friends a long way to their new home. If so, make sure that they are fit to travel – a quick ‘onceover’ from the vet with ease any doubts. Plan their trip in advance to minimise delays. Factor in regular travel breaks, pack plenty of drinking water, their favourite snacks and on-board entertainment (may we recommend Doctor Doolittle!).

Is your new home ready for its star occupant? Secure your boundaries and check if there are any busy roads nearby. Don’t forget to check that if you neighbour’s pets can access your garden, they can also get out again!

If you have a cat, you will need to keep them in for between 2-4 weeks until they’re allowed out on the prowl. For outdoor cats, it is advisable to invest in a cat litter tray to that you can avoid any catastrophes. If your cat is prone to stress, invest in a cat spa by buying a special natural plug-in remedy to calm your kitty – which will hopefully reduce the risk of your cat attacking your furniture as well!

For four-legged friends of the canine variety, check out your new local walking spots. If there are fields nearby, check that the general public are permitted to walk dogs in them – you don’t want to upset the local farmer! Check online to see if there are any local dog-walking groups or pubs nearby that are dog-friendly. This way you and your dog can both join the pack!
