About Shitterton
Best known for its eyebrow-raising name, the hamlet of Shitterton lies just outside Bere Regis. A collection of mostly thatched properties dating back to the 18th Century, Shitterton’s name is even older, thought to have been in use in Anglo-Saxon times as much as 1,000 years ago. Referring to the stream that cuts through the village having been used, once upon a time, as a latrine, the hamlet’s name has attracted worldwide attention, but is something of which Shitterton’s residents are staunchly proud.
Today, this picturesque hamlet undoubtedly feels like a rural idyll, while benefiting from its close proximity to the local amenities of Bere Regis, including a petrol station, post office, public house and doctors surgery. Beyond is the A35, which connects the area to the county town of Dorchester to the west and to Poole and Bournemouth to the east.
