About Portesham
Just off the South West Coast Path between the county town of Dorchester and the seaside town of Weymouth, Portesham offers an enviable location for those wanting to enjoy the best of what both towns and the rolling Dorset countryside have to offer.
The area surrounding Portesham is rich in prehistoric remains, including Bronze Age barrows and a Neolithic chambered long barrow known locally as the Hell Stone. The village itself was twice home (in childhood and later life) to Vice-Admiral Hardy, a commander under Lord Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar. Nearby Hardy’s Monument, built in 1844, stands in his commemoration and can be seen from over half the county.
Today, Portesham is a pretty village with a stream running through it, its history evident in the stone cottages lining its streets. As part of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s ‘Living Churchyard Project’, the parish church of St Peter manages its churchyard for the benefit of the abundance of wildlife living and growing there, including more than 70 species of wildflower and 50 species of lichen. For human inhabitants of Portesham, there are numerous community groups in the village, and the popular pub and village hall provide an extensive programme of classes, festivals and events throughout the year, and a real sense of community.
