We were very pleased to recently link up with the Dorchester Literary Festival and Waterstones of Dorchester to launch a creative writing competition aimed at Dorchester school children aged between five and twelve years old.
The competition known as Story House, a Dorset Story, received an amazing entry level with over 300 stories being put before a selected team of judges, looking for originality and imagination combined with high levels of spelling and grammar.
Entries that get to the final will be judged by locally based authors Lord Fellowes and David Solomons, winner of the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize. The overall winners will be announced in May.
The reaction from the schools participating has been superb. Said Jo Bourne, Year Three teacher at St. Mary’s, Dorchester; “The ‘Story House’ competition has given our children a real interest in their surrounding area and has helped to produce some wonderful writing. A great idea!” while Esther Derrien, Year Four teacher at Manor Park First School added; “The children are busy writing stories to enter in the ‘Story House’ competition. Writing for a real purpose always makes writing more fun!”
