About Osmington

Nestled within a National Landscape, Osmington lies approximately four miles north-east of Weymouth at the eastern end of the South Dorset Ridgeway. The small village is most well known for the Osmington White Horse, a hill figure of King George III on horseback. Cut into the limestone of Osmington Hill in 1808, the 323 feet high figure commemorates the King’s frequent visits to Weymouth, which consequently became an early, popular resort town.

Although Osmington’s written history dates from 940, there is evidence of settlement in the area as early as the Bronze Age. The oldest homes in the village date back to the 1500s, and the parish Church of St Osmund has been standing (with the help of alterations) since 1170. Renowned English landscape painter John Constable spent his honeymoon in the village in 1816, and painted ‘Weymouth Bay: Bowleaze Cove and Jordan Hill’, which now hangs in the National Gallery, London.

Today, Osmington is an affluent residential village with a public house and village hall. Closer still to the coast, the neighbouring village of Osmington Mills offers a cafe, a well-regarded public house, lake fishing and equestrian facilities, and beautiful clifftop views across Weymouth Bay towards the Isle of Portland.
